Women’s Issues CommitteeThe Women’s Issues Committee supports human rights for women and girls, and sponsors Expanding Your Horizons conference: Events Expanding Your Horizons conference at UCSC: March Women's issues news Spring 2008 Expanding Your Horizons Expands! VWC Board Members Sheila DeLany and Donna Ziel have been working on Expanding Your Horizons in Science, Math and Engineering, for Santa Cruz, San Benito, Santa Clara and Monterey counties since 2001. This annual event has grown and grown, bringing in dozens of 8th through 12th grade young women to the University of California, Santa Cruz, each year. The conference includes a keynote speaker, lunch with time to interact informally with mentors, two workshops, and a final plenary session. The workshop leaders and speakers are all women who have found success (and joy) in occupations based on math, science and engineering. The effort to catch the interest, and motivate young women to remain involved in these fields, has proven very successful. The program is fun and enlightening to the students, and parents who attend are provided a separate program so that they may provide the support their daughters might need in working toward careers in these fields. The VWC and the Recycling Centers provide sponsorship funding for the Conference, and VWC volunteers (including Sandy Love and Linda Moore) solicit gifts and prizes for the young women who attend. The VWC is proud of its involvement in this program, and especially proud of Sheila and Donna for the hundreds of hours they have devoted to it.
