Women’s Issues Committee2010 Women's Issues Committee Report Expanding Your Horizons held a tremendously successful conference this October, with 180 high school girls attending the all-day event on UCSC's Science Hill. Keynote speaker Danielle Feinberg, Director of Photography at Pixar, gave a delightful illustrated talk on "The Math And Science Behind the Images" and inspired all with her frank and insightful perspective on women and Pixar, Inc. She answered the many audience questions, and stayed with us the whole day, photographing the workshop activities and putting together a delightful closing session slideshow. SLV's Dr. Amy Solomon presented her always-in-demand "So You Want To Be A Doctor?" among the full menu of workshops on varied STEM topics - science, math, engineering and technology. The young women student volunteers from the award-winning Academic Excellence Program (ACE) handled all kinds of logistical details and helped the day go smoothly. We look forward to another exciting conference next year! The County Women's Commission has completed the writing of the report on the status of women and girls in Santa Cruz County (SOWAG) and is in the final editing stages. The Executive Summary will be published at the end of the year, and the entire document will be available online for download and linking through various websites, including the Women's Commission website and the VWC. The Commission will be holding Town Hall meetings in district throughout the next year for review and comment on the report, and community input into action and implementation of SOWAG recommendations. The VWC Women's Issues submitted reports to the State Commission on the Status of Women on our activities for their August hearings, and Committee chair De Lany attended the September Beijing+15 conference in San Francisco of the California Women's Agenda and Women's Intercultural Network, reporting on the actions in Santa Cruz County towards gender equality.
