Women’s Issues CommitteeFall 2010 Opening on County Women’s Commission The Santa Cruz County Women’s Commission, a non-partisan board that advises the Board of Supervisors, is putting the finishing touches on its Status of Women and Girls report, a project that has taken several years to compile and write. The commission hopes to deliver the report to the Board of Supervisors by the end of the year. The commission, which is made up of 2 appointees from each supervisorial district, currently has an opening in the 5th District (SLV and Scotts Valley). VWC Board member Sheila De Laney has served on the commission for the 5th District for many years so, if you are interested in women’s issues and would like to explore being appointed to the commission, get in touch with Sheila (email or call her at the Blind Pilot: 338-4436) or call Supervisor Mark Stone’s office (454-2200). Expanding Your Horizons Science and Math Conference: October 9th The mission of the Expand Your Horizons (EYH) Program is to encourage young women to enroll in science and math courses by introducing them to the broad range of careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while they’re still young enough to make educational and career choices. Outreach efforts are focused on 9th – 12th grade young women. Expanding Your Horizons conferences began over 35 years ago and are now held annually at campuses throughout the United States and around the world. Our local EYH conference will be held on October 9th at UCSC. Registration for the local conference is done online so, if you know any high school girls who might be interested in attending the conference, point them in this direction: http://eyh.ucsc.edu. |
