“Sharps” Hazard Being Confronted
The County has contracted with Ecology Action for a 2-year project to set up convenient, permanent collection areas throughout the County of Santa Cruz for both sharps and unwanted/expired pharmaceuticals. Part of the project will include significant outreach and education to the public in doctors' offices, medical facilities, and pharmacies.
According to program coordinator, Josephine Fleming, sharps containers will be given away for free as part of the program, with lists of the proper disposal sites to take them to.
This is great news for the recycling center operators who regularly have to deal with hazardous materials thoughtlessly left at the VWC’s recycling centers. Syringes, human waste contaminated materials, kitty litter, diapers and worse have all been left for our employees to dispose of. Sticking you hand in a bag apparently filled with paper can be quirt hazardous.
We’ll be looking forward to that “significant outreach”!
Bus Shelters Not to Be Rebuilt
According to a recent letter from Supervisor Mark Stone, three new shelters have been installed in the Fifth District in locations designated as priority locations. These include Mt. Hermon Road at Long’s, Mt Hermon Rd. at K-Mart and Graham Hill Rd. at Hwy 9, inbound. Only one of those is in the SLV. According to Maintenance Manager for the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District, Tom Stickel, one other bus shelter is planned for the SLV – the one for Felton Faire. The Felton Faire property owner has not agreed to returning the shelter to the parking lot, so an alternative site is being sought.
