SLV Redemption/Recycling Centers

The Valley Women's Club provided the first recycling opportunity in the San Lorenzo Valley soon after its inception in 1978 – a monthly drop-off center (with the assistance of Ecology Action) in Boulder Creek. Over time, the VWC provided political support for expansion of recycling opportunities, resulting in a weekly collection offered by North Central Garbage, alternating between towns in the SLV. Later, when the AB2020 law was passed in 1988, and redemption centers mandated within ½ mile of every major market throughout California, the VWC set up the redemption center in Felton. Soon the for-profit corporation providing the service for Ben Lomond Market and Johnnie’s decided to pull out after an unprofitable first year (transportation costs were too high). The VWC stepped in and opened redemption centers there to help those markets and provide the service to the community.

More than simply State Certified Redemption Centers, the SLV Redemption/Recycling Centers accept a wide range of materials for recycling, so those who do not use Waste Management’s curbside pick-up service will have a place to recycle those materials as well.

The County of Santa Cruz has always been far-sighted in its treatment of solid waste, supporting waste reduction, hazardous waste recycling, re-use organizations, and non-profit recycling efforts of the VWC and California Grey Bears, along with mandating that Waste Management recycle a wide-range of materials in its curbside recycling program.

The SLV R/R Centers reimburse consumers for the California Redemption Value (or California Refund Value) which they pay when purchasing beverages. CRV is charged for most beverages including bottled waters, sodas, beer, wine coolers, pure juices (under 46 ounces) and juice-like drinks, but not milk or pure juice in the 46 or larger containers.

For information and current amounts paid, call 338-1728.

Your donated materials are tax deductible; ask for a receipt.

Free Hazardous Waste Disposal

Every Thursday and Sunday from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, a remarkable service is offered for free to Santa Cruz County residents. At the Ben Lomond Transfer Station ("The Dump"), located on Newell Creek Rd. off Glen Arbor, the County provides Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal for free. Many products from garden and yard, automobile maintenance, or kitchen and bathroom, can be extremely hazardous if not disposed of properly. Paints, paint removers, paint thinner, solvents, garden chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, glue, wood preservatives, photographic chemicals, pool and hot tub chemicals, and dry cleaning solvents may all be taken to the facility during business hours. (Ammunition or explosives must be picked up by your local law enforcement agency; just call the non-emergency number for the County Sheriff and they will come help you out with those materials.)

Also accepted at the Transfer Station HHW facility on Thursdays and Sundays are:

  • aerosol cans
  • auto repair products
  • car polish/wax
  • engine cleaners
  • gasoline
  • parts cleaners

Some automotive products are accepted DAILY by the Valley Women¹s Club¹s recycling center at the Ben Lomond Transfer Station (not at Boulder Creek or Felton!). These include:

  • batteries
  • antifreeze
  • brake fluid
  • transmission fluids
  • motor oil
  • oil filters
  • household batteries

These items...

  • air fresheners
  • bathroom cleaners
  • disinfectants
  • drain cleaners
  • floor care products
  • furniture polish
  • indoor insecticides
  • nail polish
  • outdated medicine
  • oven cleaners
  • rug or upholstery cleaners

...have hazardous ingredients and must be brought to the HHW facility on Thursdays or Sundays from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM (regular "dump" hours).

If you have medical waste or syringes, please contact Environmental Health at the County at 454-2022 for assistance.

Empty containers of these products are generally recyclable. The main exception is used motor oil containers, which must be disposed of in the trash if completely empty. For further information call 454-2606. IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO BRING THEIR WASTE TO THE COLLECTION FACILITY, THE HHW TEAM WILL PICK UP SUCH ITEMS FROM YOUR HOME. Please call the same number to make an appointment for pickup.

All electronic equipment is now accepted for recycling at the Ben Lomond Transfer Station (and the County dump in Watsonville). The equipment has reusable materials removed and hazardous materials disposed of properly. This service is provided free by the County, except for the $15 charge for televisions and for computer monitors. Electronic equipment may be brought 7 days a week during regular dump hours (7:30-3:30).

A local computer sales and repair business, MC2 in Soquel, accepts and refurbishes most electronic equipment for local schools and charities. Their fee for a TV or monitor is only $5 as of 12/04. Contact them at 464-7262. Another computer refurbisher is Compute Jones, 462-6779.”

The Valley Women's Club operates three State certified redemption/recycling centers as a community service. Under contract with the County of Santa Cruz, we operate the recycling center at the Ben Lomond Transfer Station, as well as smaller centers in Felton and Boulder Creek.

All sites accept CRV (California Refund Value) beverage containers for redemption (a refund of the fee paid when you purchase beverage containers). This includes beverages in aluminum cans, bi-metal (steel) cans, glass bottles and plastic bottles. The refund value was increased January 1, 2004 from 2 1/2 cents per container up to 24 ounces to 4 cents per container. Containers 24 ounces or larger are now worth 8 cents each, up from 5 cents in 2003. This should motivate more consumers to recycle these containers, especially the plastics which are now recycled at a very low rate.

In addition to the beverage containers, all sites accept other aluminum containers, plastic containers #1-#7 (lids removed), "tin" cans, newspapers, cardboard (empty and flattened), and mixed papers (junk mail, cereal boxes and other paperboard, magazines, catalogs, phone books). See below for additional materials accepted at the Ben Lomond Transfer Station.
