EnviroAdventures Field Trips Fun Way to Learn for Preschoolers & Parents
By Dusty Gipson, Environmental Committee Member

EnviroAdventures, a free monthly field trip for preschoolers created by VWC Board Member Dusty Gipson, is proving to be a GREAT way to introduce youngsters to environmental concepts and topics. Their parents learn a lot too! The program is the extension of Dusty’s successful environmental preschool program, sponsored by the VWC Environmental Committee in 2007. We have many fun adventures planned for this year and encourage parents to bring their children and join in!

Previous EnviroAdventures field trips included visiting a Biodiesel gas station, exploring the Natural History Museum in Santa Cruz, and a recent trip to the Felton Farmers Market – nothing better than delicious produce to bring home the message of the importance of buying locally to support environmentally sound agricultural practices!

Call Dusty for more information on upcoming excursions: 338-3787.

Green Solutions for Everyday Living

An extraordinary amount of information was provided by informed and skilled speakers at the Green Solutions Workshop given by the Environmental Committee in April. Preventing various sorts of Non-Point Source Pollution was the focus of the event.

Speakers included Ryan Devonshire, ASE Master Technician from Ernie’s Service Center, speaking on vehicle pollution; Jennifer Harrison from Ecology Action discussed preventing pollution from domestic animals; Angie Stuart and Ezra Neale from the Resource Conservation District, presented detailed information on home drainage and roads; Tai Stills, from the Environmental Committee, briefed the audience on reducing pets impact and alternatives to polluting products; and Stephanie Sellers Sakasai. EcoAlchemist from ARO by design, gave a lively presentation on making your own inexpensive, effective and non-toxic household products.  Questions and answers added insight and information to the presentations.

The entire program was filmed by Tamara Lynn Scott who then produced five ½-hour segments which are available online and are being shown on Community TV on Saturdays in the coming weeks.  Tamara added a beautiful theme song to the segments, “United,” whose words can be found on our website.

Circle Saturday, October 11th on your calendar for the 22nd Annual San Lorenzo Valley RIVER & ROAD CLEAN UP.  Volunteers are needed to help pull trash from the River, its tributaries, and their roadsides from 9 am to 3 pm.  Families and clubs and groups are encouraged to plan several hours to help in this important effort to protect the River and its wildlife from the long summer’s accumulation of debris, and to prevent it from being carried out into the Bay when the rains come.
