VWC EDUCATION COMMITTEE 2010 REPORT
The Education Committee of the Valley Women's Club supports educational programs from pre-kindergarten through community college. Our goal is to help strengthen student success at all levels by providing education enrichment and financial support and by encouraging the development of Cabrillo College's San Lorenzo Valley/Scotts Valley Center.
In February we participated in Kindergarten Round-up at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary and Kindergarten registration at Boulder Creek Elementary schools by providing "Ready for School" bags to each student registering for kindergarten for fall 2010. Each bag contains material designed to help students develop skills that will help them be ready for kindergarten curriculum expectations. The bags contain scissors, crayons, pencils, a book parents can read to the child and material about programs available in our local libraries, as well as an application for a library card! These were well-received by all new students and their parents! Funding to purchase the bags and their contents has come from the Mihalik Fund at the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County and from the Valley Women's Club.
In April we sponsored a "Financial Planning for College" presentation at SLE Multipurpose Room. This presentation was designed to help parents of children of all ages, but especially those who are still in elementary school, to understand the various ways in which they can begin early to save for the expenses of college in the future. Although the turnout for this event was smaller than we had hoped, the committee is interested in pursuing this, or a similar event, in the future.
The VWC gives scholarships each year to graduating San Lorenzo Valley High School seniors who are going to Cabrillo College. The committee selected four students this year and announced the winners at the SLV High School Awards Ceremony in May. Support for the Scholarship Fund is generated by donations from VWC members and from the annual Rummage Sale held in Boulder Creek each June. The winning scholars are invited to attend and are introduced at the VWC's Annual Membership meeting.
The VWC has for many years supported the development of a branch campus for Cabrillo College in the SLV/Scotts Valley area. In spring 2007 the Cabrillo College Scotts Valley Center opened. A community-based Advisory Committee was established for the Center which includes three members of the Valley Women's Club. In the fall, one of our members participated in an ad-hoc committee to advise the Cabrillo administration on potential cost-saving strategies for the off-campus centers (including Scotts Valley). In the fall the Advisory Committee received an update from the Cabrillo administration regarding the anticipated effects of current and future budget reductions on the Center.
We welcome new members to the committee and thank all who have participated in our activities this year.
