Scholarship Recipients Begin Classes
By Hilary Stanley

The four 2008 Scholarship recipients have started school at Cabrillo College, each with a significant boost to covering their costs from the Valley Women’s Club. These SLV High graduates all have strong goals and dreams, and plan to work hard to achieve them.

Coty Ladd received $600 to help her get a start on her plans to become a Marine Biologist. Emily Dirk (not shown) also received $600; she’ll be focusing on Environmental Studies. Rachel Gregory plans to major in Fire Technology, and her scholarship of $400 should help this first semester. Lindsay Kiel also received $400 and is interested in Classical Literature.

Our best wishes for success to these young women!

Teachers Delighted by “Ready for School” Bags

The VWC Education Committee started a great new project this year! Committee member, Dusty Gipson, did some research and learned that there was a real discrepancy in readiness among the incoming kindergarten students – some had far more skills than others, from using scissors to recognizing letters. Some had never held a book.

So Dusty surveyed SLV & Boulder Creek Elementary’s kindergarten teachers and came up with a list of items that they wished each child had access to before coming to school in the Fall, to help build some skills. Moving fast, Dusty submitted a grant to the Anicka Mihalik Memorial Fund in July. In August, the grant was awarded and $2,000 received.

And what was the outcome? 196 tote bags were purchased and filled with the wish-list of the teachers. This included crayons, scissors, notebooks, glue sticks, construction paper, card games, pencils and pencil sharpeners… and books! AND some colorful information sheets about what great resources are available for children and parents at our local libraries – and a library card application!

The bags were distributed the first week of school and were a big hit!
In 2009, the bags will be distributed when parents come in to register their children, so the preschool age children will have more opportunity to use the materials and gain more practice in the skills before starting school in the Fall.

Many thanks go to Dusty, the Education Committee, and to Susan and Andrew Mihalik for the grant award to fund the project. Hopefully it can become an annual program. (Contact Dusty if you want to help! 338-3787)
