Ideas Coming In for 30th Year Celebration…
The Valley Women’s Club will celebrate thirty years of commitment to serving the SLV community in 2008 – and we have received some great ideas to make it a very special year and are in the process of making decisions about these suggestions. Among the suggestions are a 30-year overview in a “scrap book” of annotated photos (see related article), creating a VWC mascot (a redwood tree was suggested), a music/arts event like the Redwood Mountains Faire, recycled-fabric bags for all members (and for sale), stainless steel water bottles with VWC logo, inviting Tess Newman to speak around Earth Day (The Environmental Committee is working on this.), and others.
The General Meeting will not be held until early March, in order to have everything in place, so watch for the Email Tree announcement and your invitation!! You will NOT want to miss it!
We are still open to more ideas, so…
Please share your ideas with us! Send them to our email address (valleywomen@sbcglobal.net) or call Beth at 246-1610, or mail them to our PO Box 574, Ben Lomond, CA 95005. Thank you!
A Hard-Bound Book of Memories for the VWC’s 30th!
Calling all VWC members and friends! Search your attics, basements, bags and boxes for photos and videos of Valley Women's Club events and people. Go back in time! VWC member and former Board President, Cindy Frobish is a professional "scrap booker" and has offered her expertise in developing a hardbound book that will chronicle our history over the past 30 years. Cindy brought examples of the type of book to the November Board meeting and offered her skilled services in creating the book! The Board enthusiastically accepted her generous offer.
Cindy is counting on you to IMMEDIATELY go to your closets and basements and pull out photos (or videos) of VWC activities and events. Call her at 338-2702 and she’ll arrange to pick them up, scan them, and return them to you. Cindy will ask you to tell about the photos and your experiences, so she can annotate the photos chosen for the book. We are very grateful to Cindy for this very special contribution of her time and creativity.
This book will be available at our 30th Anniversary party/general meeting in March and at all VWC events after that.
VWC Board to Hear About School Bond – Members Invited!
December Board Meeting Moved to Highlands Senior Center
School board members Lea Dakota and George Wylie will be coming to the VWC Board’s December meeting with SLVUSD Superintendent Julie Haff to give us information on Measure O, the upcoming School Bond measure. The meeting takes place at 6:45 pm, on Tuesday, December 11th at the Senior Center in Highlands Park, on Hwy 9 south of Ben Lomond.
The VWC donated $3,000 to the School District rebuild the high school library after it was destroyed by fire. The School Board has decided, after much research, that the best way to rebuild the library, and to provide for other important improvements, is through a School Bond to raise the funds. This has resulted in Measure O which seeks funds “to acquire, construct and improve school facilities, including rebuilding the high school library recently destroyed by fire with a modern facility and improved access t technology, improving the performing arts theater for school and community use, constructing additional classrooms, and improving playgrounds and security at each campus by issuing $18,900,000 in bonds at legal interest rates, with a citizens’ oversight committee, annual audits, and no money for administrator salaries.” You can see details of the ballot measure at http://www.votescount.com/feb08/meao.pdf.
The VWC Board will be taking a stand on Measure O after due consideration of the information presented at the December meeting. VWC members and the public are invited to attend the meeting, to meet Superintendent Julie Haff and School Board Members Lea Dakota and George Wylie, and to join in the discussion. See you there!
Valley Women’s Club Bulb Sale a “Beautiful” Success
Hundreds of daffodils, tulips and Queen Fabiola bulbs are being planted throughout the San Lorenzo Valley by VWC members and their friends – or are being gifted to others – as a result of the VWC’s Fall Bulb Sale fundraiser. The Spring blooms should be glorious!
The VWC’s budget will benefit from this annual effort, with well over $1,000 net added to the “Income” column. Many thanks to Beth Benjamin for organizing and purchasing the bulbs, for all the folks who helped put together the mailing and bag the bulbs, and for Linda Moore’s phone calls to sell the remaining bags.
And thanks to everyone who purchased bulbs – may they bring you years of pleasure.
Meet & Greet Helps Propose Priorities
VWC Members & Friends Join “Umbrella Project”
The Fall Meet & Greet was a great event – both enjoyable and productive. VWC Members and Valley residents joined for drinks and snacks, and games and discussion – and created a long, exciting and challenging list of possible goals for the VWC to focus on in the coming months. We’re grateful to all who attended and shared their ideas!
Along with sharing and learning about the VWC, those attending had their photos taken under umbrellas, holding signs in support of ratifying CEDAW (see the VWC website for information on CEDAW). Go to the following website to see how you can join in the Umbrella Photo Petition! Your help is needed... Please click here to sign the petition.
Watch for Board Elections Ballot/Membership Renewal
Nominations have been coming in for the 2008 VWC Board elections, and you will soon be receiving your ballot. At the same time you will have the opportunity of renewing your VWC membership for 2008. With all the exciting issues, from our 30th year celebrations to candidates’ forums for elections, you’ll want to be current and assured of receiving your Email Tree updates and your quarterly Newsletter. And the VWC will need your continued support and participation to achieve its goals for the year. Please RENEW and VOTE!
Once Again, Be Sure VWC E-Mails Make it Past Your Span Filters!
One way for the VWC to communicate items of interest or concern to its members in a timely manner is via its Email “Tree.” Long-time VWC member, Board Member, and past Hammer-Marcum Award Recipient, Shirlee Byrd, maintains the Membership List and the Email Tree. Please be certain that the messages she sends are accepted by your email. The address to watch for is as follows: valleywomen@sbcglobal.net

Your 2006 Board, several just re-elected to new two-year terms; others continue to serve out current terms. Emmi Schambeck (center, back row) retires after years of dedicated commitment. Our newest board member is Nancy Gerdt (not pictured).
